September Start Up

 Welcome 2024-25 Ravens!

The school year begins on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 for all grade 9’s (9:00 am -12:25 pm) and for all grades 9-12 on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 (all students full day). The information included in this package will assist you and your family in preparing for the 2024/25 school year. Remember to check our RBSS Website regularly for more information and updates.  We will also send out more information during the last week of August through our RBSS App RBSS APP, and the August issue of the Raven’s Nest.

Student Course Schedule:
Grade 9’s – Students will receive paper copies of their schedules on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 in their Period A Class.
Grade 10-12’s –Students will be able to access their schedule via the student/family portal on Monday, August 26, 2024.  The final schedule can be accessed at 6 pm Tuesday, September 3, 2024 via the MyED student/family Portal.  Paper copies will not be available for Grade 10-12 students.  The MyEd instructions can be found on our web page RBSS Family Portal Instructions.

Counsellors will be available on August 27 & 29, 2024 (9:30 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 3 pm) to meet with only grade 12s for the following reasons:

• Incomplete schedule (less than 8 courses)
• Grad credit concerns

August 28th the Counselling Team will be away from the building for the morning and will return to the school to see students between 1-3 pm.

Counsellors will also meet with students in grades 10 & 11 who have incomplete schedules (less than 8 courses).

All other questions will be addressed after school starts. A reminder, we do not accommodate “teacher shopping” for students who want a certain teacher or to be in a class with their friends.  New registrations who are in catchment will be contacted by their alpha VP, Counsellor or a clerical staff member regarding course selection or incomplete registration information.

Opening Week:
Tuesday, September 3, 2024 – Opening Day (Grade 9’s only)
French Immersion and English Stream Inclusive – BLOCK ORDER ABCD
Morning Schedule (9:00 am – 12:25 pm)

• 9:00-9:15 Students will gather in the Aviary and find their names on Block A class lists which will be posted in the Aviary. Staff will be there to help students find their Block A teacher.
• 9:15-9:45 Grade 9 Student Assembly in the large gym. – Teacher Guided Entrance and Exit for all grade 9’s
• 9:50 – 10:00 – Grade 9 students will locate their teachers (teachers will be at clearly marked areas around the gym – as explained in assembly). Block A Teachers will walk the students out of the gym and up to their classrooms.

• 10:00 – 10: 20 Block A
• 10:25 – 10: 45 Block B
• 10:50 – 11:10 Block C
• 11:15 – 11: 35 Block D
• 11:40 – 12:25 Scavenger Hunt
• 12:25 Dismissal Bell
• 12:35 Buses will start picking up students signed up for Bus Services

Thursday, September 5, 2024

Friday, September 6, 2024

School begins at 9:00 am, lunch from 11:22 am – 12:00 pm, school ends at 2:23 pm

Transport
Students who have registered with transportation should have received an email outlining their route, bus number and estimated times by the end of July. If you believe the information is incorrect or you did not receive the information, please contact the School District Transportation Department at bussing@sd62.bc.ca.

Lockers
Lockers will be made available via an app starting in September. Detailed instructions will be provided once students are in session.

Code of Conduct
The Sooke School District Secondary School Code of Conduct can be found here.  Please review this with your child. Please note that smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere on school district property and students are also expected to respect bylaws and neighbours.

Resolving Concerns
Guidelines for resolving concerns can be found on the school district website. As a general guideline, communication should remain as close to the ‘source’ as possible. For example, if the topic pertains to something within the classroom, speak to the classroom teacher.

Please note that we require parents to pre-arrange phone or in person appointments with staff. Teachers, Counsellors and Vice Principals have busy schedules and we want to make sure they can set aside the time needed to meet with you.

Important Dates for September 2024 School Start-Up

• August 27 & 29 – RBSS open for Counselling appointments for Grade 11 and 12 course changes only (starting at 10 am)
• August 28 – Counselling Team will be away from the building for the morning and will return to the school to see students between 1-3 pm
• September 2 – Labour Day (no school)
• September 3 – First day of school – ½ day for all Grades 9’s ONLY (9:00 to 12:25 pm)
• September 4 – Full day – All Grades 9 – 12
• September 5 – Picture Day (retakes TBD)
• September 17 – Fire Drill #1 @ 9:20 am
• September 23 – School Planning Day (School not in session)
• September 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
