We are proud to offer a full French Immersion Program. Upon successful completion of the French Immersion Program and of all other graduation requirements, students will receive a Bilingual Dogwood Diploma from the Ministry of Education of the Province of British Columbia.  This is sometimes considered the “Double Dogwood”.   Here are the French Immersion courses on this pathway.

Over the next four years, the French Immersion program at Belmont will transition to Royal Bay. Here’s when the transition will take place:

2020-2021:                  Grades 9-12 at Belmont (Current Year)

2021-2022:                  Grade 9 at Royal Bay
Grades 10-12 at Belmont

2022-2023:                  Grades 9-10 at Royal Bay
Grades 11-12 at Belmont

2023-2024:                  Grades 9-11 at Royal Bay
Grade 12 at Belmont

2024-onwards:            Grades 9-12 at Royal Bay

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I do a French course in the summer? No. French Immersion courses are not offered in the summer.

Can I do a French course online? No. French Immersion courses are not offered online.

Can I do one of my French courses in English and get the credits for it? (i.e. Sciences or Social Studies in English) No. The courses we offer in the French Immersion program at Royal Bay must be completed in French. You will not get the credits needed to get the Double Dogwood diploma if you complete the course in English.

What happens if I fail one of the courses in the French Immersion program? Can I complete it in English during the summer? No. You will have to do the course again with students who are a grade lower than you. We don’t offer French courses in the summer.

I am not sure I want to stay in the French Immersion program. What can I do? It is normal to ask yourself these questions. The first thing to do is to talk about it with your parent(s) or guardian(s), with a French Immersion teacher or with your counsellor. If your parent(s) or guardian(s) agree with your decision, ask them to communicate with Department Head of the French Immersion. You can then discuss of your options and make the best choice for you
